We can’t take our eyes off math

We know we have work to do in reading. And we also know we can’t take our eyes off math.

This recent Bridge Michigan story highlights a conversation happening across the state: while Michigan has rightly focused significant attention on improving literacy, math outcomes remain a major challenge for students.

Math outcomes are more than test scores. They’re about problem-solving, critical thinking, confidence, and the skills students need for whatever path comes next.

Our most recent state assessments* show both progress and areas where we need to keep improving—especially when we look at outcomes for our economically disadvantaged students and the opportunity gaps that remain.

That’s why our 2030 Vision** matters.

It gives us a clear focus: improving literacy and math outcomes for all students, while making sure every learner has access to the opportunities and supports they need to succeed.

This work doesn’t happen overnight. It takes sustained focus, strong instruction, support for educators, and a commitment to keep learning and improving.

I appreciate the work happening across our district. And I believe our board, administration, and educators are staying focused on the outcomes that matter most: helping every one of our kids reach their full potential.
