Interesting timing in today’s Record-Eagle: a profile of our 7 TCAPS school board candidates that touched on school vouchers.
It got me thinking about something every school board member—and, frankly, everyone who cares about public K-12 education—should be paying attention to.
The U.S. Treasury just released proposed rules for the new federal Education Freedom Tax Credit, which takes effect January 1, 2027.
The program allows taxpayers to receive a federal tax credit of up to $1,700 for contributions to Scholarship Granting Organizations that provide scholarships and other educational services to K–12 students.
States have to opt in, and Governor Whitmer has not yet made that decision.
It isn’t technically a voucher program. But it creates a new federal tax-credit mechanism for directing privately contributed, federally subsidized dollars toward K–12 scholarships and educational expenses, potentially including private-school tuition, tutoring, and other educational services.
And this is no longer theoretical. The Treasury rules are out, the program starts in less than three months, and Michigan has a decision to make.
Tonight at 6pm, The National School Boards Association is hosting an informational webinar on this issue.
The discussion will cover the new federal regulations, implementation timeline, and potential implications for students, families, school districts, and local governance.
I’ll be listening tonight—and I’ll be especially interested in what this could mean for TCAPS.
Stay informed. Ask questions. And pay attention to this one.
