A really encouraging story in today’s Traverse City Record-Eagle about Traverse City High School.

Over the past three years, the school’s on-time graduation rate has nearly doubled, from 23.9% in 2023 to 46.7% in 2025, while the dropout rate fell from 23.9% to 13.0%.

That’s what can happen when we build pathways around students’ needs.

Smaller classes.

Flexible scheduling.

Individualized academic and counseling support.

Project-based learning.

Virtual options.

And opportunities to connect learning to the community and postsecondary careers.

TCHS also gives credit-deficient students a pathway to a diploma, with a flexible quarterly schedule that allows students to transition without trying to catch up on months of missed coursework.

As Principal Jennifer Ciolek put it, the goal is to make transitions “as seamless and supportive as possible.”

This is the kind of work that connects directly to our 2030 Vision*: creating opportunities for every student to find a pathway to success and ensuring our kids who face the greatest barriers have the support they need to thrive.

I’m proud of the work happening at TCHS and grateful to the staff who continue to find ways to help our Mavericks succeed.
