Organizations like Rotary Club of Traverse Bay Sunrise‘s Born to Read, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Grand Traverse Region, and Munson Healthcare are showing what’s possible when we invest early, giving families tools to build language and learning from birth, in line with guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Our 2025 Third Grade Reading Proficiency (M-STEP ELA)***:

• All third graders: 49%

• Economically disadvantaged third graders: 38%

•Not economically disadvantaged third graders: 53%

These gaps remind us why equity matters — and why early access to books, support, and caring adults is essential.

Our new strategic plan** is clear: when we invest early, remove barriers, and work together, we expand opportunity for every child.

Let’s keep building this system — from birth through third grade and beyond — so every one of our kids have what they need to flourish.
