That’s a wrap on another fantastic Michigan Association of School Boards conference.
Over the past few days, I had the opportunity to learn alongside school board members and education leaders from across Michigan about everything from K–12 school finance and student achievement to inclusive governance, innovative policy leadership, collaborative decision-making, meeting transparency and the art of leadership.
One thing I’ve come to appreciate during my time on the school board is that effective governance is something you have to learn — and keep learning.
Like our teachers, administrators and staff, school board members should continue learning, too.
I’m grateful that TCAPS invests in professional learning for board members and grateful for opportunities like this to learn from experts and from other school leaders doing this work across Michigan.
I’m heading home with plenty of notes, some new ideas and, probably most importantly, more questions to ask.
Because the more we learn, the better equipped we are to ask good questions, make thoughtful decisions and better serve the students, staff, families and community who place their trust in us.
Our district’s mission is to educate, support and empower all learners.
I like to think “learners” also includes those of us entrusted with district governance, too.
Thanks, MASB, for another great conference!
