One thing I’ve come to appreciate during my short time on the school board is that effective governance is something you have to learn.

Serving on a school board isn’t just about showing up for meetings.

It’s about understanding school finance, student achievement, board governance, legal responsibilities, strategic planning, and the role a board plays in helping a school district succeed.

I’m grateful that TCAPS invests in professional learning for board members through organizations like the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB) and The National School Boards Association.

Like our teachers, administrators, and staff, trustees should continue learning, too.

Recently I was honored to receive MASB’s Certified Board Member and Award of Merit recognitions.

While I’m grateful for the recognition, I’m even more grateful for the opportunity to keep learning alongside colleagues from across Michigan.

Our district’s mission is to educate, support, and empower all learners.

I like to think that includes those of us entrusted with district governance as well.

I’m looking forward to continuing that learning next week at the MASB Summer Institute in Kalamazoo.

The more we learn, the better equipped we are to ask good questions, make thoughtful decisions, and better serve the students, staff, families, and community who place their trust in us.
