From Steadying the Ship to Full Speed Ahead: A New Vision for Early Literacy at TCAPS

🔔Our most recent third-grade reading outcomes certainly make clear the work ahead:

• All third graders: 49% proficient

• Economically disadvantaged third graders: 38%

• Not economically disadvantaged third graders: 53%

These numbers show why it’s time to move from steadying the ship to full speed ahead.

That’s why, for the first time, our district’s strategic plan* includes explicit goals not only to improve reading outcomes for all students, but also to close the opportunity gap between economically disadvantaged students and their peers.

This reflects a clear commitment: success for every one of our kids means ensuring every student has access to the support, instruction, and opportunities they need to become a strong reader.

Improving early literacy takes focus, consistency, and long-term commitment. Our teachers, literacy specialists, and school leaders are already doing important work — including implementing science-of-reading–aligned curriculum and instruction — to strengthen reading foundations in the early grades.

Our 2030 Vision* builds on that work and sets a clear direction for the years ahead: higher reading outcomes for all students and narrower opportunity gaps.

This work matters — and we’re committed to getting it right.
