Please keep showing up for all of our kids

This was originally published in my once-in-awhile newsletter.

Quick thanks to many of you for writing/speaking in support of school board candidates who stood for a more inclusive, equitable, and compassionate district.

While the candidate I voted for wasn’t selected, it was heartwarming to read/listen to many who care about helping all of our kids succeed – especially those who are furthest from opportunity.

This is an ask to keep showing up.

It’s essential that we do, given what’s happening not only in Washington and Lansing but locally, too:

• our student achievement gaps between our economically disadvantaged kids (nearly 40% of TCAPS kids come from low-income homes) and our kids who are not

• our current lack of district goals regarding student achievement and educational equity

• our upcoming strategic plan process (opportunity for better)

This Tuesday, March 18th, there’ll be a special school board meeting on educational equity.

🗞️Read the Record-Eagle story about it.

This public meeting will be a chance for parents, students, staff, and community members to share their thoughts on whether the district should include goals in our new strategic plan to:

1) close our student achievement gaps
2) improve educational equity
3) raise outcomes for all students

🐾In 2015, Courtade Elementary proved that closing achievement gaps between our economically disadvantaged kids and our kids who are not and lifting all students is possible.

Ten years later, we have an opportunity to do it district-wide.

Our kids deserve it – and they’re counting on us.

Here’s the meeting packet for Tuesday (and here’s the request I sent to the board in January).

If you can’t make it to the meeting on Tuesday night, an email of support to schoolboard@tcaps.net would be appreciated.

Please keep showing up.
