Across Michigan, families have more school options than ever. That’s true here in Traverse City as well.
Recent state data* show that about 2,200 students who live in the TCAPS district attend school somewhere else (a number that has trended up slightly in recent years), while about 500 students from outside the district choose to attend a TCAPS school (a number that has trended down slightly).
Those numbers are a reminder of something important:
Families have choices.
And our responsibility as a district is to make sure TCAPS is a choice families feel great about.
That means focusing on what we can control.
One of the best ways we do that is by offering high-quality programs that help students explore their interests and find their path.
Across our schools, students are discovering opportunities in:
Athletics
The arts
Academics and leadership
Career and technical programs
Music and performance
Clubs, service, and extracurriculars
The four students pictured here – Matthew Quigley, Kylie Ball, Ash Alexander, and Victoria Boales – are just a small snapshot of the many ways TCAPS students are pursuing their passions and achieving great things.
When students have opportunities to explore their curiosity, develop their talents, and feel connected to their school community, it strengthens not only their experience – but our schools as well.
The encouraging news is that after several years of enrollment decline, TCAPS enrollment has stabilized for the first time since 2019.
That’s a positive step—and a reminder that investing in strong programs, supportive educators, and engaging opportunities for students matters.
Because ultimately, the goal is simple:
To make sure every student and family sees TCAPS as a place where they can thrive.
