My first Michigan Association of School Boards Annual Leadership Conference was fantastic — a great few days of learning, connecting, and recharging.
Here are my 10 biggest takeaways:
Lead with trust – Every decision we make as school board members helps shape community confidence and stability.
Board self-reflection matters – Strong boards regularly assess how we’re doing — and stay grounded by returning to our mission, vision, and values.
Board committees should serve a clear purpose – When structured well and led by strong chairs, committees can make our governance team more efficient and transparent.
Career & Technical Education deserves the spotlight – Our next plumbers, electricians, and builders are in kindergarten right now. Expose them early to the trades. Let’s celebrate every pathway to success.
Technology should bring us closer together – As keynote speaker George Couros reminded us, it’s about community, curiosity, and wellbeing — not just screens and systems.
AI can help us work smarter – New tools can help school board members synthesize large meeting packets and complex data so we can focus on what matters most: students.
Equity and access must remain central – Every decision should expand opportunity and success for all learners.
Stay informed on state and federal funding changes – Programs like SNAP, WIC, Head Start, GSRP (32p), and retirement debt policy directly impact our families and classrooms.
Wellbeing matters — for students and leaders. Healthy leaders build healthy communities.
Public education thrives on connection and togetherness – When schools, families, and communities work together, everyone rises.
Grateful for the chance to learn alongside so many passionate Michigan school leaders.
