If we’re expanding our PK–12 after-school and summer learning and enrichment opportunities—the why behind the proposed East Middle multi-use fieldhouse—what should that actually look like?
Our after-school and summer program, LEAP, has a clear vision:
“To provide students with increased opportunities for engagement beyond the school day through educational and recreational activities to improve learning, health, and wellness.”
The L in LEAP stands for Learning.
But right now:
- There are no academic or learning-focused LEAP offerings
- There are no LEAP programs for Pre-K to 1st grade (or 9-12th grades), even though we say the program serves PK–12
💡 So what could be possible with a truly expanded LEAP?
- Put the L (Learning) back into LEAP?
- Free after school and summer enrichment for all kids?
- Early childhood offerings?
- After-school tutoring and academic support?
- Summer school options for elementary and middle school students?
- New concrete goals in our strategic plan around early literacy, foundational math, graduation rates, and equitable access to programs like Great Start Readiness Program preschool and advanced high school coursework?
If the vision is opportunity for all students—this is our moment to make that real.
