Timely Chalkbeat article ahead of tomorrow’s school board committee meeting on our chronic absenteeism.
Here’s the meeting’s presentation.
TCAPS’ chronic absenteeism (missing 10% or more of school days):
– 2022/23: 22.6%
– 2034/24: 20.9%
“Poverty is a big factor, affecting parents’ ability to navigate illness, work and get children to school.
Districts with the greatest percentage of economically disadvantaged students have the highest rates of chronic absenteeism; and those with the fewest poor students have the lowest rates.
Bridge’s analysis shows 40.1% of economically disadvantaged students are chronically absent compared to 16.1% of non-economically disadvantaged students are chronically absent.”*
Are we, as a community, doing all we can to support our kids who are furthest from opportunity?
