Back to DC: From Dad to School Board Advocate

Heading back to DC today for The National School Boards Association‘s Equity & Advocacy Institute — and feeling grateful for the opportunity.

The last time I was there meeting with our U.S. Senators and members of Congress was in 2018 for National Cancer Prevention Day with LESS CANCER — and I had my son Jameson with me.

This time, I’m going as a school board member, advocating for Traverse City students — especially those furthest from opportunity — and for strong federal support for:

• Title I (economically disadvantaged students)

• Career & Technical Education (trades)

• Special education (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act)

• No cost school meals

Proud to bring our community’s story with me — including writings from Traverse Heights Elementary 4th and 5th graders about why school matters.

Excited for the learning and conversations ahead.
